Board and Batten Wall Siding

What it is, how it's built, and what materials it's typically made from.

What is board and batten siding?

Board and batten is a style of wall siding built from wide boards installed vertically across a wall, with the seams between adjacent boards covered by thin strips called battens. The alternating rhythm of wide boards and narrow battens gives this siding its distinctive, rustic look — a design that has remained a timeless classic in both exterior and interior architecture.

How it's constructed

Boards are fixed vertically to the wall, typically attached to horizontal furring strips (also called blocking) that run behind them at regular intervals, giving the boards something solid to fasten to. Once the boards are up, the seams where adjacent boards meet are covered by battens, and trim pieces finish the top and bottom edges of the installation for a clean, polished look.

Types of materials for board and batten siding

  • Vinyl siding — one of the most affordable and durable options, which is why it's a popular default choice.
  • Wood siding — a timeless classic, available in a range of species and finishes depending on your budget and style.
  • Fiber cement siding — a mixture of cement, sand, and cellulose fibers, valued for its durability and ability to be painted or stained to match any style.
  • Painted illusion — rather than installing physical boards and battens, some DIY projects simply paint the pattern directly onto a flat wall, creating the visual effect of the siding at a fraction of the cost and effort.

Is board and batten the same as wainscoting?

No. Board and batten uses vertical boards with battens covering the seams, and can run the full height of a wall with no upper limit. Wainscoting, by contrast, is a decorative paneling style that typically covers only the lower third or quarter of a wall.

Board and Batten Formulas

How boards, battens, furring rows, and material lengths are calculated.

Boards = ⌈ Wall Width ÷ (Board Width + Spacing) ⌉

Number of Boards

Boards = ⌈ Effective Width ÷ (Board Width + Spacing) ⌉

Effective width is the wall width minus the combined width of any doors and windows.

Number of Battens

Battens = Boards − 1 (one edge) or Boards + 1 (both edges)

Use Boards − 1 if only the seams between boards need covering; use Boards + 1 if both outer edges also get a batten.

Furring Strip Rows & Material

Rows = ⌈ Height ÷ Row Spacing ⌉ ; Material = (Rows + 1) × Width

Furring strips run horizontally behind the boards at regular vertical intervals, each spanning the full wall width.

Board, Batten & Trim Material

Board / Batten Material = Count × Height ; Trim Material = Trim Count × Width

Each board and batten runs the full wall height; trim pieces run the full wall width along the top and bottom edges.

Effective Width — Wall Width − Σ(Door Widths) − Σ(Window Widths).
Row Spacing — typical furring strip spacing is about 60 cm (≈24 in), adjustable to your framing needs.
Trim Count — commonly 2 (top and bottom), adjustable to your design.
Total Cost — sum of (each material's length × its price per unit length).

Worked Examples

Two full board and batten material takeoffs, step by step.

Example 1 — A Corridor Wall Section

A wall section measures 3 m wide and 5 m tall, with no doors or windows. Board width is 5 cm and spacing is 8 cm, covering one edge seam.

Boards = ceil(300 cm ÷ (5 + 8) cm) = ceil(300 / 13) = ceil(23.08) = 24 boards Battens = 24 − 1 = 23 battens Board material = 24 × 5 m = 120 m Batten material = 23 × 5 m = 115 m Furring rows (60 cm spacing) = ceil(500 cm ÷ 60 cm) = ceil(8.33) = 9 rows Furring material = (9 + 1) × 3 m = 30 m Trim (default 2) material = 2 × 3 m = 6 m

Example 2 — A Larger Wall

A wall measures 7 m wide and 8 m tall, board width 9 cm, spacing 12 cm, one edge seam covered.

Boards = ceil(700 cm ÷ (9 + 12) cm) = ceil(700 / 21) = ceil(33.33) = 34 boards Battens = 34 − 1 = 33 battens Board material = 34 × 8 m = 272 m Batten material = 33 × 8 m = 264 m

Common Board and Batten Estimating Mistakes

Avoid these errors before ordering material.

Forgetting to subtract doors and windows

Using the full wall width without subtracting openings overstates the number of boards needed.

Using the wrong batten formula

Covering both edge seams needs Boards + 1, while covering only one seam needs Boards − 1 — using the wrong one leaves a seam exposed or wastes a batten.

Mixing units between board width and wall width

Board width and spacing are often measured in inches or centimeters while wall dimensions are in feet or meters — forgetting to convert skews the board count significantly.

Skipping furring strips on masonry or uneven walls

Boards need a solid, flat surface to attach to — omitting furring strips on an uneven wall can lead to a poor, uneven installation.

Rounding the board count down

Boards can only be installed as whole pieces, and rounding down leaves part of the wall uncovered — always round up.

Not buying extra material

Even with precise formulas, cutting mistakes and waste happen — buying a small buffer of extra board, batten, and trim material avoids a mid-project supply run.

Frequently Asked Questions

Direct answers to the questions people ask most about board and batten siding.

What is board and batten wall siding?

It's a type of wall siding made of wide boards installed vertically, with the seams between them covered by thin strips called battens — a popular, traditional form of architectural decor.

How much material do I need for my board and batten project?

It depends on the number of boards and battens, and the wall's width and height. Board material equals the number of boards times the wall height; batten material equals the number of battens times the wall height.

How do I determine the number of battens needed?

If you want both edge seams covered, use Battens = Boards + 1. If only one edge seam needs covering — for example, where the wall continues onto an adjacent wall — use Battens = Boards − 1.

Is board and batten the same as wainscoting?

No. Board and batten uses vertical boards and battens and can cover a wall's full height, while wainscoting is decorative paneling that typically covers only the lower third or quarter of a wall.

How many boards do I need for my wall?

Divide the wall's width by the sum of the board width and the spacing between boards, then round up to the next whole board.

What materials can I use for board and batten siding?

Vinyl, wood, and fiber cement are the most common choices, though some DIY projects simply paint the pattern directly onto the wall.

Do I need furring strips for board and batten siding?

Furring strips give the boards a solid, evenly spaced surface to attach to, which is especially important on masonry or uneven walls.

How many trim pieces does a board and batten wall need?

Two is a common default — one along the top and one along the bottom — though this can be adjusted to your design.

Does this calculator account for doors and windows?

Yes. Enter the number and width of doors and windows, and their combined width is subtracted from the wall width before calculating the number of boards.

Can I use board and batten on an entire wall or just part of it?

Either. Board and batten has no height limitation, so it can cover a small accent section or an entire wall from floor to ceiling.

Can this calculator estimate the total cost of my project?

Yes. Enter a price per unit length for board, batten, furring, and trim material, and the calculator totals the full project cost.

What board width and spacing should I use?

This is largely a style choice — wider boards with narrower spacing (or vice versa) both work, though 5–15 cm boards with similar spacing are common starting points.

Should I buy extra material beyond the calculated amount?

Yes, it's wise to purchase a bit of extra board, batten, and trim material to account for cutting waste and mistakes, even though the calculator's formulas are precise.

Is this board and batten calculator free?

Yes, it's free to use with no signup required.

Can I use this calculator on mobile devices?

Yes, the layout is fully responsive and works on phones, tablets, and desktops.
