ROI, or Return on Investment, is the percentage gain or loss generated by an investment relative to its cost. It measures efficiency: how much you got out relative to how much you put in. An ROI of 25% means you generated $25 for every $100 invested; an ROI of –15% means you lost 15 cents on every dollar deployed. Because it's expressed as a percentage rather than a raw dollar figure, ROI is inherently comparative — it lets you weigh a $500 return on a $1,000 investment against a $50,000 return on a $1,000,000 investment and see that both represent the same 50% performance.

Core formula. Example: Initial $10,000, Final $13,000 → ((13,000 − 10,000) ÷ 10,000) × 100 = 30% ROI.
Absolute dollar gain. Example: $13,000 − $10,000 = $3,000 net profit.
How many times you got your money back. Example: $13,000 ÷ $10,000 = 1.30× return multiple.
Converts total return to an annual rate. Example: $50k → $80k in 5 years → (1.6^0.2 − 1) × 100 = 9.86% per year.
Adds all additional costs to the denominator before calculating ROI. Example: $100k invested + $10k costs → total $110k; final $145k → ROI = 31.82%.
Works backward from a target. Example: $20k investment, 40% desired ROI → profit = $8k, required final = $28k.

Why ROI is the common language decision-makers use to compare fundamentally different opportunities.
ROI matters because it strips away scale and exposes efficiency. A company earning $10 million in profit isn't obviously better than one earning $5 million — unless you know how much capital each deployed to generate those returns. With ROI, you can compare them on equal terms, which is why it shows up in nearly every corner of business and finance.
In business, ROI is the standard tool for evaluating capital expenditure proposals, technology investments, and strategic initiatives — a company comparing three factory upgrades will calculate each option's projected ROI and select the one with the highest risk-adjusted return. In marketing, ROI measures revenue generated relative to campaign cost — a $10,000 campaign generating $35,000 in attributed revenue has a 250% marketing ROI, though attribution across multichannel campaigns makes this harder to measure precisely than it sounds. In real estate, ROI needs to account for purchase price, renovation costs, transaction fees, and ongoing maintenance, which is exactly what the ROI Including Costs mode above is built for. Two related but distinct performance metrics that are easy to confuse.
ROI (Return on Investment) is broad and flexible — it can be applied to any investment where you have an initial cost and a final return, whether that's a stock purchase, a marketing campaign, a piece of real estate, or a piece of equipment. It doesn't require any specific accounting structure.
ROE (Return on Equity) is a narrower, accounting-specific ratio used to evaluate how efficiently a company generates profit from its shareholders' equity. It's calculated as Net Income ÷ Shareholders' Equity, and it only applies at the company level, using figures drawn directly from the balance sheet and income statement — it isn't used to evaluate an individual investment, purchase, or campaign the way ROI is.
In short: ROI answers "did this specific investment pay off?" while ROE answers "how efficiently does this company generate profit from the equity shareholders have put in?" The two are related — a company with a high ROE is generally deploying shareholder capital into high-ROI projects — but they're calculated differently and used to answer different questions.
ROI is popular for good reasons, but it has real limitations worth knowing before you rely on it.

A 10% annual ROI is generally considered solid for stock market investments. Marketing ROI benchmarks typically target 200–500%. The right benchmark depends on the asset class, risk level, and investment duration.
Profit is the absolute dollar amount earned. ROI expresses that gain as a percentage of the original investment, making it useful for comparing investments of different sizes.
Annualized ROI converts a multi-period total return into an equivalent annual rate, making investments of different holding periods directly comparable. Formula: ((Final ÷ Initial)^(1÷Years) − 1) × 100.
Yes. A negative ROI means the final value was less than the initial investment — the investment generated a loss rather than a gain.
Use Basic ROI mode: enter the total purchase price (including commissions) as Initial Investment and the current value or sale proceeds as Final Value. Include dividends received in the final value for a total return calculation.
Marketing ROI = ((Revenue Generated − Campaign Cost) ÷ Campaign Cost) × 100. Enter total campaign spend as Initial Investment and attributed revenue as the Final Value in Basic ROI mode.
Use ROI Including Costs mode. Enter the purchase price as Initial Investment, add renovation, legal, and transaction costs as Additional Costs, and enter the sale price or current valuation as the Final Value.
Return multiple equals Final Investment ÷ Initial Investment. A 2.0× return multiple means you doubled your money; 3.0× means you tripled it. It's commonly used in venture capital and private equity contexts.
Additional costs — fees, taxes, maintenance, shipping — reduce net profit and therefore lower the effective ROI. Ignoring them systematically overstates returns and leads to poor investment decisions.
