As a rule of thumb, a standard modular brick wall needs roughly 50 bricks per square meter (about 4.6 bricks per square foot), once you account for a standard mortar joint. So a 5 m × 3 m wall (15 m²) needs roughly 750 bricks before waste, and a bit more once you add a waste allowance for cuts and breakage. The exact number depends on your brick size, mortar joint thickness, and any doors or windows you need to subtract — which is exactly what the calculator above works out for you automatically.
The calculator follows the same three-step logic a mason would use by hand — it just does the arithmetic for you.
Enter your wall's length and height (and thickness, if you want a mortar estimate too), pick a brick size or enter a custom one, and subtract the area of any doors or windows. The calculator converts those inputs into a wall area, works out how much area a single brick covers once its mortar joint is included, and divides one by the other to get your brick count — then rounds up and adds your chosen waste percentage so you don't come up short on-site.
Multiply the wall's length by its height to get the gross area, then subtract the area of any doors, windows, or other openings to get the net area you actually need to fill with brick.
Example: 5 m × 3 m = 15 m².
Example: 15 m² − a 2.1 m² door = 12.9 m².
A brick's coverage isn't just its face dimensions — it also includes the mortar joint around it, since that joint takes up wall space too. Add the standard joint thickness (commonly 10 mm) to both the brick's length and height, then multiply to get its effective face area.
Example: a 190 × 90 mm modular brick with a 10 mm joint = 200 mm × 100 mm = 0.02 m² per brick.
Divide the net wall area from Step One by the brick face area from Step Two, then round up to a whole brick and add a waste allowance for cuts, breakage, and mistakes.
Example: 12.9 m² ÷ 0.02 m² ≈ 645 bricks, plus 10% waste ≈ 710 bricks.
Mortar fills whatever space is left in the wall once the bricks themselves are accounted for. Find the wall's total volume (length × height × thickness), then subtract the combined volume of every brick going into it — what's left over is the mortar volume you need to order.
Example: 5 m × 3 m × 0.1 m = 1.5 m³.
Example: a 1.5 m³ wall with 710 bricks leaves roughly 0.4 m³ of mortar to fill the joints.
