How This Hiking Time Calculator Works

The longer the trail, the longer the hike. Distance is the foundation of every estimate, multiplied by your speed.

Climbing uphill takes effort. We add roughly one hour for every 600 m of elevation gained, in line with Naismith's Rule.

Roads and paths allow around 5 km/h; rough terrain typically drops your sustained pace to about 4 km/h.

Hiking Time Formula

Built on Naismith's Rule with terrain and descent adjustments.

Time = (Distance ÷ Speed) + (Elevation Gain ÷ 600) ± Descent Adjustment + Breaks Naismith's Rule, extended for terrain type and descent conditions.
Distance component — Total trail distance divided by your terrain-adjusted speed, converted to minutes.
Speed component — 5 km/h for roads & paths, 4 km/h for rough terrain.
Elevation adjustment — Every 600 m of elevation gain adds about 60 minutes.
Descent correction — Gentle descents subtract 10 min per 300 m lost; steep descents add 10 min per 300 m.
Break time — Added directly to the final hiking duration in minutes.
