What Is the Average Hiking Speed of a Person?

Most hikers move at 4–5 km/h (2.5–3 mph) on flat, well-maintained trails. That drops to around 3 km/h on rough or hilly terrain, and can fall to 1–2 km/h on steep, technical ground. Fitness level, pack weight and altitude all shift these numbers up or down.

The Simplest Way to Estimate Hiking Time: Naismith's Rule

Devised in 1892, Naismith's Rule is still the fastest mental estimate for any hike: allow 1 hour for every 5 km, then add 1 hour for every 600 m climbed.

Time = (Distance ÷ 5 km/h) + (Elevation Gain ÷ 600m × 1 hr)

Distance component — Total trail distance divided by your terrain-adjusted speed, converted to minutes.
Speed component — 5 km/h for roads & paths, 4 km/h for rough terrain.
Elevation adjustment — Every 600 m of elevation gain adds about 60 minutes.
Descent correction — Gentle descents subtract 10 min per 300 m lost; steep descents add 10 min per 300 m.
Break time — Added directly to the final hiking duration in minutes.
